Paris Street; Rainy Day is the best known painting by French artist Gustave Caillebotte. It was painted during the height of the Impressionist movement. But it differs in style than his contemporaries. It does not feature broad brush strokes and the lack of details. Contrarily, it heavily relies on lines and leans more on realism than impressionism. It also features the artist’s interest in photography. The main figures, a man and a woman walking underneath an umbrella, wearing contemporary Parisian fashion, are focused and painted more in details; while the figures in the foreground are “out of focus” and those in mid-distance have sharp edges, like in most photos.
