Dancers are the favorite subjects of Edgar Degas. In his entire career, he had painted countless works about dancing and dancers. The Dancing Class was the first painting of the artist about the subject. Instead of going to the backstage of Paris Opera as he did later on, Degas had the dancers come to his studio to pose for him. In this masterpiece, the some dancers are seen practicing, particularly the one at the center, whose graceful pose is reflected on the mirror. The other dancers are resting near the piano with the fiddler. But this graceful and happy atmosphere is contrasted by one dancer who seems to be crying near the door.
