Untitled, 1940 by Hemendranath Mazumdar - FAMOUS INDIAN ART - HANDMADE OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS
Bengalise artist, Hemendranath Mazumdar, mastered the Euopean academic style of painting and successfully adapted it to his Indian subject matters. Although he was an accomplished landscape painter he was better known for his portraiture centering mainly on sensual studies of the female form. This untitled painting exemplifies his style, featuring a beautiful woman wearing a beautiful flowing golden sari - the colour of which dramatically contrasts with the darker background. The woman bends over to pull a wooden stool under her foot. Her head is bowed and her golden earrings and long necklace fall forward. She appears to be holding a mirror in her other hand. This painting, like much of Mazumdars work, combines elements of Western Classicism with Indian tradition.
